We may sometimes find strange items around the house, perhaps when we are cleaning out a drawer or looking through boxes in the attic. Sometimes, we may not be able to identify what they are used for.
One of the items that got people confused recently is these little metal spools. They almost look too small to be useful for anything, but they had a purpose and people used them around the world on almost a daily basis.
The Internet was able to clear up the confusion as to what these little items were. They are thread bobbins, something that is not typically used in today’s society.
If you’ve ever used a sewing machine or have even done some hand sewing, you realize that the real work is in the details. These little items were used for a very special purpose, as they held the thread that got wound around it.
You might wonder why people didn’t just use an entire spool of thread as they were working. It is because these little gadgets would hold smaller amounts of thread, which was both convenient and would save material.
One of the things that all of us would have wanted when we were sewing is for the thread to smoothly come off of the spool. That is what a bobbin was able to do, because the thread would be round neatly and tightly around the bobbin so it would not get tangled.
In addition, it was easy to change the bobbins if necessary because of their small size and convenience. In other words, you could jump from one color thread to another, within a very short amount of time.
Something else that bobbins were able to do is to keep the sewing area in an organized manner. Different colors of thread would be stored on different bobbins so that they could be put into a container and pulled out whenever needed.
In other words, even if you were in the middle of a project, you could simply get into the little box or cabinet and get the thread you needed to swap it out without any problem.
The only thing you needed to do was to wind the bobbin with the color thread you desired. You could then add it to the top of the machine and continue selling.
Not many people sew like this anymore, but they were an important part of history that is still in use among those who enjoy sewing the old-fashioned way.
