Many people doubt the fact that individuals with Down syndrome are able to go far. One particular woman with Down syndrome, however, is proving them all wrong.
Ana Victoria Espino De Santiago was not only able to go to law school, she was able to complete it and become a qualified lawyer. That 25-year-old woman from Mexico is thought to be the first lawyer with Down syndrome.
Anna was born in Guadalupe, Zacatecas, and received her law degree in July from Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas. It seems as if this is only the beginning for her. She spoke with the local news outlet, saying:
“I really like law for defending people with disabilities and people’s rights and defending my personal rights.
“[To] help people with disabilities, help those who do not have a voice, because that is why I am a lawyer.”
Ana would like to do more than just be a lawyer. She would also like to be an advocate for the disabled and may dabble in politics as well.
She added: “I see myself being a local representative, I am passionate about the law and I want to pave the way so that all people who live with a disability can occupy decision-making spaces, because our condition does not silence our voice, will and ability to contribute to improving our state.”
By and large, most of the comments that have been coming in from social media have been positive. They are congratulating her for her achievement and looking forward to seeing what she can do in the future.
