Co-host of โThe View,โ Whoopi Goldberg, has recently faced backlash for a controversial joke about a hypothetical murder plot against President-elect Donald Trump.ย Democrats and figures in the mainstream media have already been the subject of intense criticism for their supposed role in creating a toxic atmosphere surrounding Trump after the two failed assassination attempts against him in the past year.
Goldbergโs remarks came during a discussion about the power dynamic of specific figures within the incoming Trump administration, such as Vice President-elect JD Vance and Elon Musk, who Trump tapped to help lead the Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.).ย โWho is in charge? Because Iโve been saying it for a while. Iโve been saying itโI think Elon Musk believes heโs president. I do,โ Goldberg said on ABC Newsโ โThe Viewโ earlier this week.
She added, โIโve called him vice president, Iโve called him president because I donโt know what JD is doing.ย I donโt remember the last time we even talked about JD.โย The co-host then made a joke suggesting that Musk and Vance may collude against Trump. Goldberg then stated, โHey, you know who [Trump]; stay away from the stairways.ย Because, you know, people put their leg out to trip you going down the stairs. Watch out,โ she explained.
However, after a commercial break, Whoopi made a clarifying statement about her quip, claiming she was referring to her cat. โOkay, I need to clean something up, because my cat lays in wait for me on my stairs all the time, and thatโs what I was I was thinking of that I wasnโt trying to indicate that they were actually standing there with their legs out, hoping he would trip.โ
Sunny Hostin weighed in, โNobody wants anything bad to happen to the president.โย Goldberg said, โNo, it was light-hearted, and itโs the holidays. Come on! My goodness.โย Hostin chimed in, โYou did not mean that anybody should hurt the president.โ Goldberg continued, โNo, okay, you know the thing about this show, there is no way not to step in poop. Thereโs no way to do it. Thereโs no way not to do it. So, for all of you who are waiting and saying oh my God, listen to what you said, I got a cat who does it to me every day. And thatโs what sparked it.โ
Regardless of her โclean upโ statement, her joke sparked a reaction from conservatives on social media.ย Commentator Nicholas Fondacaroย wrote, โABC News moderators Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar claim Elon Musk and JD Vance are planning to kill Trump and usurp control of the government together as Musk/Vance.
โ[Trump] stay away from the stairways.โ โ Whoopi.โ
Conservative CNN pundit Scott Jennings also weighed in on the matter, questioning why Goldberg didnโt question who has been running the White House under the Biden administration. โWho is in charge?โ Whoopi wonders aloud about Trump, on the day that the WSJ reveals Biden has been โdiminishedโ for the last four years and unelected staff have been running the country,โ Jenningsย said.
