On Wednesday, a manhunt for a suspected gunman accused of shooting and killing a deputy ended in a shootout, in which the suspect was killed. Authorities say the suspect, 56-year-old Robert Lee Davis, fatally shot Brazoria County Sheriff’s Deputy Jesus Jesse Vargas while he was attempting to serve a warrant. Reportedly, Davis was a repeat offender.
The Houston Police Department took to X on Wednesday evening to provide an update on the situation, confirming that the suspect had been shot and killed. “A short time ago, the suspect was shot by law enforcement officers behind the businesses near the original shooting scene here on Stella Link. The suspect is deceased,” the post read.
Authorities reported that Vargas was shot in the head while serving the warrant in a Dollar General parking lot around 11:30 a.m. Vargas and his partner located the suspect’s vehicle in the area where the fugitive opened fire and fled the scene as they approached. Vargas was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Brazoira County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Facebook, mourning the loss of Deputy Vargas. “We are deeply saddened to share the loss of Deputy Jesus Vargas, who faithfully served the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office for 17 years. Deputy Vargas was shot and killed in the line of duty. He was a dedicated public servant, known for his integrity, compassion, and commitment to our community. He was more than a team member—he was a friend, mentor, and inspiration to everyone who knew him,” the post read.
In a follow up post on Thursday, the sheriff’s office drew attention to a memorial set up in Vargas’ honor. “We have set up a memorial outside the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office at 3602 CR 45, Angleton, TX, to honor and remember our fallen brother, Deputy Jesus “Jesse” Vargas. Deputy Vargas dedicated 17 years of his life to serving our community with integrity and compassion,” the post read, showing a squad car with flowers on the hood, surrounded by American flags.
“His loss has left a hole in our department and community that can never be filled, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and worked alongside him. We invite those who wish to pay their respects to visit the memorial during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family, friends, and loved ones as we all navigate this loss together,” the statement concluded.
