Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will reportedly not attend President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration. Pelosi has attended 11 presidential inaugurations over the years, including Trump’s first swearing-in ceremony in 2017. Pelosi joins former First Lady Michelle Obama, who also announced that she would not attend the event.
In December, Pelosi suffered a fall while traveling in Luxembourg, breaking her hip and having to undergo hip replacement surgery. Pelosi was seen returning to the House floor with the assistance of a walker. However, this did not prevent her from attending a ceremony for the late former President Jimmy Carter earlier this month.
No reason has been reported for Pelosi’s absence from the ceremony. Similarly, Michelle Obama has not publicly stated a reason for her absence either, while her husband, former President Barrack Obama, will be in attendance. “Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration,” a statement from the Office of Barrack and Michelle Obama read.
Over the years, Trump and Pelosi have maintained a less-than-cordial relationship. Amid Trump’s intense legal battles in 2023, Pelosi took a jab at Trump, describing him as a “scared puppy.” She said at the time, ““I wasn’t in the courtroom, of course, but when I saw Trump coming out of his car…I saw a scared puppy. He looked very, very, very concerned about [his] fate. I didn’t see any bravado, or confidence, or anything like that. He knows. He knows the truth: That he lost the election, and now he’s got to face the music.”
Trump fired back on Truth Social, “[Pelosi] said something about me, with glee, that was really quite vicious. ‘I saw a scared puppy,’ she said, as she watched me on television, like millions of others, that didn’t see that. I wasn’t ‘scared.’ Nevertheless, how mean a thing to say! She is a Wicked Witch whose husband’s journey from hell starts and finishes with her. She is a sick & demented psycho who will someday live in HELL!”
The American Tribune reported on an alarming claim made by Pelosi in the run-up to the presidential election in November that drew intense criticism online. During an interview with MSNBC host Jen Psaki, Pelosi claimed Trump suffered from “cognitive degeneration,” the very concern many Americans had toward Joe Biden throughout his presidency.
