Reflecting on Symbols: Significance of the Gold Star
In our daily lives, license plates often feature a variety of symbols and designs. Yet, how often do we pause to contemplate the meaning behind a gold star?
Symbolic of Sacrifice
A Gold Star on a license plate represents more than just a decoration. It embodies a profound loss—the ultimate sacrifice made by a family member in military service. It stands as a solemn tribute to the dedication and character of the fallen service member.
Roots in History: The Blue Star Program
Initiated in 1917 by World War I Army Captain Robert L. Queisser, the Gold Star tradition traces its origins to the Blue Star program. Motivated by his sons’ frontline service, Captain Queisser aimed to honor their commitment by creating the “Blue Star Service Banner.”
Founding American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.
In 1928, 25 mothers convened in Washington, D.C., to formally establish American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. These brave women, along with many others, augmented the blue-starred service banners with gold stars, symbolizing the sacrifices of their fallen loved ones.
